I think John nailed it when he said that even in the South, where diminutive terms of endearment are common, they’re never used to address a colleague or co-worker. What’s okay for a waitress in Philly is not okay for an Ivy-league educated Northern politician. He knows better- it’s dismissive, arrogant and condescending. I usually just reverse the roles and see if it seems inappropriate- if it does, then it’s wrong. Imagine the reporter saying, “Sweetie, could you just answer one more question?”
I did get a kick out of the pure derision dripping from the reporter’s voice when she used the word, though. Wonder if that group of reporters swooning over a jeans-wearing BO last week would have quite the same reaction after seeing this video.
