I agree with Mr. Navarette, immigration reform can’t be about anything but race because the greatest number of illegal aliens in this country are not Scandinavian, Irish, Japanese or Australians (caucasian or aboriginal). They are Hispanic. That does not, however, change the fact that they are here illegally. The desire to have laws in place to ensure that people here illegally are sent back to their country of origin and prohibited from coming back unless they do so legally is not racist. Neither is it racist to suggest that citizenship on the basis of birth be only awarded to children born to parent who are visiting this country legally. I also don’t see a problem with requiring folks to prove that they are here legally and severely penalizing them via fines or jail time if they aren’t here legally. This has nothing to do with race as long as we enforce the law without regard to race.
So, does race play a part in the debate over illegal immigration? Yes, because the people here illegally happen to be predominantly of one particular race. Does that make enforcing the law a matter of racial discrimination? No.
