This is one of those silly questions where the two sides take opposite, absolutist opinions that are frankly silly. Some of Obama’s supporters are undoubtedly voting for him because he’s black, some are undoubtedly voting for Hilary because they don’t like Obama because he’s black. On the other hand, there are probably a few people voting against Hilary because she’s female. The trick here is this: when the primary is in New York or some place metropolitan, if you look hard enough you can find someone who votes on racist or sexist grounds, but they’ll be rare. In West Virginia, there will be more of those people, and it doesn’t really matter if people are offended when this is pointed out: it’s still true. NPR had a bunch of people they questioned the day of the primary, and they said they hadn’t brought up the issue of race when they asked people how they voted and why. Several of those questioned brought up the issue themselves, and said they didn’t want a black president. But if you’d like to prove the media is being mean to white voters in rural parts of the country, you can say that they’re twisting what people are saying. For once, I’m afraid I’m on the side of the media.
