Indiana also had 211,000 men fight in the Civil War to free the slaves. 12,000 volunteered in the first week, as Lincoln asked for just 6,000 from each state over a month’s period. That 211,00 was over 75% of the eligible population—BY FAR the highest % of any state in the Union. This state has a proud history.
