Prejudice (a much more accurate term) exists whether you admit it or not. Pretending it doesn’t exist isn’t a solution. Reporters aren’t making this stuff up because people want to read about how bigoted America still is. It’s an unpopular and uncomfortable subject. My own parents (Mexican-Americans living in Texas) would never, ever vote for a black man. My 11 year old son, on the other hand, needs me to explain to him why his white grandparents are actually “brown” and why my mixed-race boyfriend is “black” although his skin is light brown, and why white people are called white when they are actually apricot-colored. Maybe when his generation grows up we’ll all think this conversation is as absurd as he does. Until then, if you who are posting here can truly say you don’t judge a person’s character by their skin color, then good for you. But to say that prejudice doesn’t exist here in the good ole USA is like saying that child abuse doesn’t exist, because you don’t know any people who do that.
