Those calling for a tourist boycott of Burma are mostly going to be leftists – for example the British TUC and the New Internationalist, as noted above. You won’t catch leftists calling for boycotts of repressive regimes that are ideologically correct (Cuba) or which threaten US interests (Iran). Things are more complicated in the case of China – its human rights record is hard to ignore, but the left has a lot riding on China as being some kind of counterweight to US hegemony
The Burmese ruling elite, however, is militaristic and ethnic, and while you couldn’t call them right-wing, they’re certainly not left-wing, so a boycott is okay with the leftist/internationalist brigade. It matters little to leftists if a few million people have to suffer in order for them to be seen occupying the moral high ground. Of course, things get a little more complicated when you point out to the leftists that Burma’s major foreign backer is China…
Establishing a coherent world-view is tricky when you have no principles to guide you.
