To Samizdat: No — you and the other right wing numbnuts are badly confused yet again. Afghanistan is yet another golden rain legacy of Bush: his utterly BS Iraq nonsense ended up wasting enormous resources and burning out most people’s passion for going after the people actually responsible for 9/11, as well as their allies and protectors. After 6 1/2 years of Iraq, going after the only legitimate post-9/11 targets, the al-Qaeda bases in Afghanistan, their Taliban allies, and of course bin Laden, has become a political issue rather than a military one. What the military people are telling Obama in so many words is that Iraq was/is a massive failure in terms of Bush’s “War on Terror” and that all that destruction and all those American and Iraqi civilian death went for naught as the real terror threat reorganized and grew elsewhere. So Obama is now in the lose-lose position of having to do what should have been done properly 8 years ago: either really escalate a nasty war that will turn most of the people against him if victory is not achieved quickly, and which will be a tacit admission of how Iraq was a pointless failure; or else maintain the course and engage in a more protracted/mostly covert war of attrition that will also turn most of the public against him unless it results in something like the capturing or killing of bin Laden.

You guys are in serious denial about the scope and size of the problems Bush bequeathed Obama. That might be because, as I suspect, most of you fools voted for Bush not once but twice, which essentially means that you generally have no idea whatsoever about what’s going on the world and why things have happened the way they did. Infinitus est numerus stultorum.
