Toto writes a very good article here HOWEVER I would like to take some issue with the following excerpt:
“Racism is alive and well in America today, despite the fact that voters chose the country’s first black president last year.”
From the start, I have always disliked the almost cliche-like “racism is alive and well in America.” Then again what would seem a positive phrase including the positive terms “alive” as opposed to “dead” and “well” as opposed to “sick/ill” is a standard cliche regarding something negative. All right, perhaps I should let this cliche alone.
HOWEVER, I would like to point out that racism in America today is less alive and well than at any time in the past. And we do have an African-American president, do we not?
MOREOVER, my travels and reading of history have led me to the conclusion that America is perhaps the least “racist” country in the world. Racism is much more alive and well in other parts of the world. For that matter, slavery is alive and well in some parts of the world as I write.
One source of American dynamism has always been the variety of peoples who call this country home. More now than ever.
So, when we says racism is alive and well in America, let us also reflect on the fact, yes fact, that racism in Ameria is not so much alive and well as in the past nor in the rest of the world today.
The only credentials I can offer on this issue besides my travels and reading would be the mixed ethnicity of my son. And he has done quite well, I would say.
As far as racism in America is concerned, I would also direct your attention to Victor Davis Hanson`s most recent article on this blog.
I consider that to be a better comment on racism in America.
My opinion of course.
Please compare and see for yourself.
Again, great article Mr.Toto, but I honestly felt motivated to address the “racism alive and well in America” excerpt.
