If West Virginia is the shape of things to come, if McCain gets more than 60% of the white vote in November, I don’t see how Obama can win.
It seems likely that this campaign will continue–in the ugly new parlance–to “racialize” and not just because Obama is black. It’s a very understandable response on the part of white voters to sense that a candidate who reveres Malcolm X, attends a black power church for 20 years and only disavows its wacko pastor when the candidate’s campaign is about to implode, is not worth trusting to look out for white citizens as well as black.
Maybe in four, eight, twelve years Obama can prove himself by deeds, not words, to be worthy of that kind of trust. But not this year.
