A ‘National Day of Service’? Or a Political Hijacking of 9/11?
And, T-Rex, I seriously doubt that volunteers like your uncle, or the NYPD firefighters, are going to be remembered on “Service Day 9/11″; they’ll get a little token admiration, and then it’s all going to be sign up for ACORN, or some other, politically correct organization. We’re going to hear about some Greenpeace activist somewhere, saving the furbish newtwart, or Cyndi McGoogleheimer, who helps people on welfare sign up for even more government benefits. Woot.
I also suspect that a lot of 9/11 heroes wouldn’t be comfortable with turning that terrible day into some sort of jolly, “Let’s all celebrate SERVICE!” pseudo-celebration. There’s nothing to celebrate about 9/11. What’s its theme song going to be? The “Happy-Happy Joy-Joy” from “Ren & Stimpy”? Gee, why don’t we make that the theme song for all our solemn memorials? Pearl Harbor, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and give them all a happy-sappy theme, so everyone can feel good about them, and those mean ol’ Republicans won’t steal their “trademarks”? Memorial Day can be “Love Mother Earth Day”, Veterans Day can be “Clean up the Streets, Day” and December 7th can become, “Japanese Anime Appreciation Day.”
Then everyone can be happy, and we won’t have to think about nasty stuff like war, or those who died at Pearl Harbor, or the 3,000 who were murdered on 9/11.
(A day for honoring the volunteer heroes of 9/11 might not be a bad idea—but if should be just for them, alone, and it should not be on 9/11 itself.)
