The bad guys are already armed up, despite the myriad, byzantine gun control laws which are effective only in disarming law-abiding citizens. For the most part, not entirely, but for the most part, the bad guys are using their weapons to kill each other. I have no problem with that. The problem I have is arming police with high-penetration rifles when they have no inclination to practice with the weapons. Even worse, since the rifles will be handed off from shift to shit, the rifles will not be sighted in to the individual cop using it. Not ONE cop in this entire thread has addressed this point, and it is the crux of the argument being made by those opposed to arming the CPD with M-4s. The refusal to answer this is bewildering. It’s like they don’t understand basic ballistics.
Whether we like cops is irrelevant. Whether we want to provide them with the tools to get the job done is irrelevant. The simple fact is that without sighting in the rifle to the individual shooter, the end result is the cops will be shooting a lot of high penetration ammo, but missing their targets by wide margins, and likely hitting something they weren’t aiming at. Add to that a basic reluctance on the part of most cops to practice, and you have in a nutshell the reasons why I oppose this.
