BB,
On a religious note, you bring up a very good point with the 18 “damnations” against women as being part of Islamic doctrine. Not that i am in any way in favour of this vile religion permeating in any way shape or form into american society, but the old testiment, while worded more gently had pretty much some of the same attitudes towards women. Both, if not all religions had their bases in the idea of “male priviledge” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Male_privilege
The US was founded on certain many Christian ideologies which had its own brand of “damnations” towards women. Look how long it took us, since our first independance day, for those ideologies to change, none of which happened easily. And if you look at any number of cult-like religions that have popped up in THIS century that have the same “damnations” against women, namely FLDS, it comes from the same male priviledge ideology. We still have a Catholic Pope who refuses to accept the idea of birth control today. Priviledge, any kind, dies a hard death. There’s just that comparison.
Christianity had its enlightenment. Many of the Islam-like principals have changed. Islam has yet to go through its own enlightenment period and i have no doubt it’ll be just as bloody.
