Sgt: Excuse me, sir. Would you please come out on the porch and speak with me?
White Gates: Certainly, Officer. How may I help you?
Sgt: The police received a report of a possible break-in at this address. May I see some ID so I can be sure you are the resident?
White Gates: Why certainly, officer. Here is my driver’s license with my photo and correct address on it.
White Gates then presents his ID and asks if there is anything else he can do to help. Sgt. Crowley asks if it would be alright to look around inside, since the report stated there were two men involved. White Gates allows the Sgt to look around. A minute or so later the Sgt is satisfied that the report was a mistake and nothing is out of the ordinary.
Sgt: Thank you for your cooperation. May I suggest you fix your door as soon as possible?
White Gates: Thank you for your concern, Officer. Have a nice day.
Notice no accusations of racism? Notice no calling anyone’s mother anything? Just civil discord and a public servant doing the job for which he is trained.
