Aside from Naipaul’s books Among the Believers and Beyond Belief, Trofimov’s Siege of Mecca is my favorite on the jihad. So good! Although i have to say i did notice in some news item or other that there is Colonel Trofimov in the FSB, and that is pretty much how these guys operate – also note that the State Dept. documents at the time which Trofimov provides shows that STate assumed the Siege was being conducted with Russian help or at the behest of Russia as part of its well-documented campaign to turn the Islamic world against the USA, so that might be worth consdiering….
