Americans and West have short memories. Let us go back in time, to creation of SEATO, to undermine India’s neutrality. Modern arms were supplied to Pakistan, including Sabre Jets, later known as widower makers by Germans. America never respected India’s will to be democratic and non aligned country. In UN Security Council there was overwhelming support for Pak and India had to rely on Soviet Union at the time.
During Bangdesh war India was put under pressure by America. It moved its 6th or 7th Fleet to threaten India. Also it was Nixon who called Mrs. Indira Ghandi “that bitch”.
Look at the record of Pak’s governance, coup after after coup by its general and show trial and hanging politicians, popular with people. On other hand India had democractic elections, right up to date. Maybe not perfect but always fair.
Let us fast forward to the time of Soviet occupation whence billions of dollars of arms were supplied to Pak’s Intel. I think it was Brengsky who was boasting about these supplies. Now things are coming home to roost. These weapons are used to kill allied soldiers, our brave men and women. Do not forget the training given to Bin Laden and his cohorts.
Much political maturity, clear vision, is needed to be a super power and not just flex the muscles and gun boat diplomacy.
There is a lot America can learn about diplomacy from Brits. Hope, in future such pitfalls are avoided.
