Leftists like Obama really believe that living under a politically correct leftist dictatorship that controls every aspect of the lives of its citizens (eg, Castro’s Cuba) is far better than the chaos of capitalism and democracy. I read in Spiegel Online that a majority of East Germans feel life was better under communism. http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,634122,00.html
Not much innovation in such places but what does happen is very predictable and life is modest but secure so long as you follow the rules.
