I am not sure of 2012—but 2016 might work. At this point in time, it seems that Sarah Palin had to resign because of the insane ethics investigations. The well meaning but naive legislators who originally passed this law will have to eat crow. It is a quintessential example of the principle of unintended consequences. Palin apparently collected only $100,000 of donations directed to help her with the legal costs. She still has to pay $400,000—and she is not a wealthy woman. On top of that, countless hours have been wasted on this nonsense. What else can she do? It is probably better for both Alaska and Palin for her to hand over the responsibilities to the lieutenant governor.
