Just a bit of nitpickery here, but the GOP primaries were not all winner take all. If they had been, Romney would still have been in a very competitive position after Super Tuesday, and the Republican race may well have lasted somewhat longer (if not as long). This would also be true if the GOP primaries were all strictly proportional or winner-take-all by district. It just happened that McCain’s early wins were largely in winner-take-all states, and Romney’s early wins were largely in proportional states.
