Kennedy who first addressed the nation on the importance of recognizing the civil rights of black Americans.

As a matter of cause-and-effect you may be right, but that kind of selective memory leaves out a few things, such as Lincoln issuing the Emancipation Proclamation and fighting a little-known war against slavery, Wilson segregating the government, Eisenhower sending the troops into Little Rock, and a few other facts of history that seem to have been purged from the collective memory.
