Actually the tradition of the Seder is exactly the opposite of Lees characterization. The Seder is the oral recounting of the Exodus. The Seder’s portions relevant to this topic — how should/does a Jew respond to the misfortune/suffering of his enemy — relate to the Seder’s requirements to drink four cups of wine and to list the ten plagues. HOWEVER, the tradition requires the spilling out of wine from your cup upon the mention of each plague. WHY, because drinking wine is joyful and a Jew may not fully celebrate the suffering of his fellow human-beings (even if they are enemies committed to his murder); so, we remove ten portions of our cups of joyous celebration. THAT IS THE TRADITION AND THE LESSON.
