In the seder, as one commenter noted above, some of the wine is spilled. This is understood to symbolize that our joy at freedom is mixed with sadness that the Egyptians died.

This based on a midrash (teaching of the rabbis) that several commenters mentioned – it is not in Scripture. The midrash says that the angels began singing in praise of God at the splitting of the red sea. According to the midrash, God rebukes the angels for praising him while Egyptians die. As pointed out, angels were rebuked, not the Jews the way Dr Lee presents it.

Based on this teaching, in our seder we indicate that our joy is mixed even though we praise god for our liberation. (This is not the only explanation of the custom to spill the wine, but it’s the common one).
