Lee has his history wrong. The black power movement started well before the murder of Dr. King. In fact there were significant numbers within the black power movement who were working to marginalize Dr. King because they were advocating violence and armed struggle as the only means for gaining what they wanted. Dr. King’s unwavering stance for non-violent civil disobedience and political actions as the only effective way to gain true long term equality was still widely embraced by the power structure within the Black community.
