During the war in Bosnia, I received an award from the South Bay Islamic Council for “never again” op-ed columns I’d written in defense of Bosnia’s Muslims as a San Jose Mercury News columnist. The columns made it clear that I’m Jewish. It was a huge dinner with people from all over the world as well as American-born Muslims. The keynote speaker, an American Protestant convert to Islam, gave a long anti-Semitic, anti-Zionist speech. I will say that when the dinner was over, a number of people rushed up to me to apologize.
