Mr Navarrette,
Ms. Sotomayor made a racist comment. If a white man had make the reverse of that comment about a hispanic woman, people would be ready to burn him at the stake.
This issue should not have anything to do with race or sex. Who cares if she is a hispanic woman? Who cares if she came from a poor background or that she put herself through school. Guess what? Please of people fit this profile. These are not qualifications to sit on the highest court in the land. She has sat on a federal bench for 17 years. She has won over 40 various awards for achievements and working with human rights.
What we need to be discussing here is not race or sexism. It is qualifications. It is articles like yours that take up people’s times and keep them distracted from what we really should be looking at: Does she qualify for the seat?
I honestly don’t care about her beating white males to get into a great school or that she wrote from some publication. And I do not care if her getting appointed is a “historic” event. Gee, can you think of a more stupid reason to put someone on the bench? In fact, if it was just a “historic” event, would that take away from other legit “historic” events?
Let’s actually take a look at some of her REAL achievements. Besides finishing 2nd at an Ivy League School and serving 17 years on a federal bench, I could not find a lot of additional information. I know that she has sat over a lot of important cases, yet no one talks about them.
It would just be nice for once if our press stopped talking about racism for once and tried informing the public for a change.
