One of the great scenes from El Cid shows Charlton Heston begging the king’s champion to take back an insult he has leveled on the Cid’s father. Too filled with pride, the champion refuses to do it. It is at that point that Heston, as the Cid, unsheathes his sword and says, “Can a man live without honor?” Obviously, for Charlton Heston, the answer was no. He lived his life with a level of honor most Hollywood types could not even fake if offered 20 million dollars. God bless Mr. Heston and his family; I will truly miss him.
