I still don’t understand that Obama thing.

You are referring to things he said, but what did he actually do?

You are actually hoping that he promotes an Iraq withdrawal only because his voters want to hear it, but how can you tell which of his other statements are made in the same spirit?

How could he have listened to a hate preacher for 20 years without noticing that something was wrong? Why does he believe that it was wrong now? Did he leave that church?

Obama, to me, seems like all words; and his American supporters seem like members of some messiah cult to me. (His European supporters seem like opportunists, who think that Obama will make America follow Europe’s lead. Well, he won’t.)

Here’s hoping that Hillary wins the Democratic nomination. I liked her husband, I would like to see him back in the White House.

I agree his Sudan policy was rubbish, but there is no real indication that Obama’s policy would be anything but ignoring Sudan while saying that people want to hear and I think the Clintons have learned from the past.

As for George Bush’s failures in Iraq and Afghanistan, I think you are focusing too much on him. I don’t think he really understands the details. Other people made those decisions, and they made them while under pressure by the president to get things done quickly and a Democratic congress to get things done ideally not at all.

The Americans certainly didn’t do enough in Afghanistan and the Iraq war stretched their resources even further. It was folly to assume that European “allies” would pick up the slack or do anything at all except stand around in expensive army camps in the safer parts of the country. You cannot trust France and Germany to help you in a case of war. In Germany chancellor (prime minister) Schroeder even had to threaten resigning in 2001 to get his own coalition to vote for sending any troops at all to help the ally. That’s how much Germany’s word is worth to Germany’s parliament.

(Schroeder later apparently authorised German secret service agents to help the US find Iraqi targets during the invasion. Perhaps Obama is like Schroeder, talking peace when people want to hear it while supporting war when necessary. But should we hope that Obama is a liar?)

I think John McCain has the most solid bid for the White House.

Here’s how I would have voted:

1996: Clinton
2000: Gore (later regretted, but not because Gore disappointed)
2004: Bush (mostly because of Kerry)
2008: McCain
