Rick, minor quibble, but in 55 Days in Peking, Heston’s character was a Marine officer, not Army, I believe. My brother, a former Marine, confirmed this and added that his character was based on Smedley Butler, who went on to become a major general in a long career and was something of a character.
Great post and great work. I will always think of Charlton Heston as sterling character and Great American. What a wonderful career from a time long since passed when stars were truly Stars and class and style counted as a measure of the actor’s value. Never again will there be such men in Hollywood. Heck, they couldn’t even find Americans to act the lead roles in the remake of 3:10 to Yuma!
