Doug,
Actually, a number of Mahidst movements throughout history have been VERY successful (not to shill, but I detail them in my book): Ibn Tumart and his al-Muwahhidun (Almohads) took over the Maghrib and ruled it for over a century; the Fatimids took over Egypt and ruled it for over two centuries; and even the Sudanese Mahdists stayed in power for well over a decade (1885-1898) before being dispatched, as you point out, to meet Allah. But you’re simply wrong in blitely dismissing Mahdism as unsuccessful.
