We consider this a good thing. Everyday Christians can read and understand God’s Word for themselves. This is why there are Protestants and Catholics. Prior to that, Catholic priests conducted mass in Latin and the Bible was only printed in Latin. This gave the priest exclusive control of the interpretation of the scripture. This opened up the door for abuse and when Martin Luther had had enough, Protestantism was born.
That abuse is evident in your examples of the Inquisition and the forced conversions in South America. However, please note that those were done by the church in Rome. The Eastern Orthodox church that represented Christianity from Greece eastward did not engage in that sort of thing. Neither did the Protestants who were the primary settlers of North America.
Catholics themselves are not evil. This is just what happens when you give clergy that much power over your life. What other religion gives its clergy that much power? Islam.

Many of these charges are thirty and forty years old. In those days, one did not question one’s priest. These days you can and that’s why these things are being revealed. In Muslim countries, questioning a member of the Islamic clergy will get you imprisoned or worse. If you take away that threat, you will see the same sort of things. Perhaps not necessarily of a sexual nature, because I think that’s due to the celibacy requirement for Catholic priests, but I’ll bet you’d find ethical problems among Imams dealing with money and power.

A God who needs to understand his creation better by experiencing birth, temptation, and death.
