From my limited understanding on current affairs in Taiwan nowadays (I was originally from there, but left over 23 years ago), current Taiwanese traded ‘short-term economic gains’ with a ‘long-term HongKong redux’ solution to the re-unification problem. I don’t think they even know the implication of their willingness of forfeit a true democracy over freely joining a totalirian regime. Of course, commie China and the wining party wouldn’t have emphasized this point.
