I think the reason that the gay community hasn’t patted Dick Cheney on the back for his stand on gay marriage is because he didn’t stand up for it when he had the power and political influence to do anything about it. He waited until he had been out of office for six months with nothing to lose before he opened his mouth. Furthermore, the reason he opened his mouth is more because of familial pressure within his own household, rather than some general commitment to equal rights for gays. This is the man who fully supported “Don’t ask, don’t tell”, which is just another subtle form of discrimination. I, personally, don’t see Cheney as an “evil” man. However, I do see someone who is an ideologue and rigid thinker.
