Did I miss references to our Civil War? Talk about reasons for anger, what about invasion, conquest, occupation, and political subordination? This was the experience of the American South. Materially and spiritually. it took white southerners more than a hundred years to “get over,” THE War. Not until the 1970s did the old Confederacy rise to the same economic level as the rest of the country, although development remains spotty even now. Whatever Lyndon Johnson’s failings, he gave the South a great gift when he broke the back of legal segregation. Do white Southerners want to put the past behind them? Blacks can be thankful that that includes
most of the virulent racism that kept the South down for a whole century, and they should know that our hatred of blacks was actually rooted in hatred of Yankees.
