In the space of one paragraph he misleads three times:

“Had the reverend not retired, and had he not acknowledged that what he had said had deeply offended people and were inappropriate and mischaracterized what I believe is the greatness of this country — for all its flaws — then I wouldn’t have felt comfortable staying there at the church.”

Had the reverend not retired – he has said that about all of the times in the last year that Rev. Wright has been controversial, but Rev. Wright’s retirement is not in effect until the end of this month – so, this has been a year& 3 month “exemption”.

“had he not acknowledged that what he had said had deeply offended people and were inappropriate and mischaracterized” — when did he do that? I don’t have access to Nexis, but a journalist who did searched and found no such acknowledgement. And notice that the last word is not any sort of acknowledgement, but an excuse.

“I wouldn’t have felt comfortable staying there at the church.” That does not say that he would have left the church as most are interpreting it, just that he would have felt uncomfortable.

So, lawyerly weasel words that in the space of one paragraph tells you a lot about his character.
