I like this part:
“One wonders how we have gotten to the point at which city officials are cowed into abandoning equal treatment of its citizens for fear of “bad press” and of the “civil rights” lobby, which stands ready to pounce on any employer (private or public) whose “numbers” don’t look “right.””
One, i don’t know what you’re quoting when you say “bad press” or “civil rights” but I know it’s not from the actual ruling. The ruling points out that the city had a legitimate cause to dismiss the test because they could be sued under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. That’s a hell of a lot more significant than “bad press.”
It’s sort of funny though. Conservatives have to tip toe around saying they want to overturn a portion of the freakin CIVIL RIGHTS ACT, so they make these little intellectually dishonest comments. As though New Haven just randomly decided not to promote Ricci. It’s also pretty slick making Ricci the face of the case. Ricci isn’t the only person in the suit, but Ricci is white. We have to keep quiet about the fact that allowing the test to be thrown out means Sotomayor ruled against the hispanic guy that passed the test too, because we have to make up things about her being racist and hating whites.
