Although it is eminently true that Morgenthau took on the State Department and did a great deal, he too was in many instances inhibited by the niceties of protocol, unlike the orthodox rabbis who had only one concern, saving lives.. These were desperate times that called for desperate measures. Morgenthau through his position saved lives. The irony he confronted was that his position enabled him to save lives and simultaneously prevented him from doing everything that needed to be done. Certainly, Morgenthau was far and away more active than Stephen Wise and his Zionist compatriots who trusted FDR and then really gave up. Thanks for your comment.
