The pity is that, while that’s true for Taiwan, it’s NOT true for China. The PRC considers ANY pro-Taiwan position to be anti-China by definition.
While Ma is very good at making himself look attractive on TV, he isn’t know for having a particularly strong hand for anything. If China wants Ma to bark to their tune, he’ll do it as long as he looks good in the papers. Ma is Mr. Clinton without the cigars!
I’ve told relatives in Taiwan that if they want real independence from China, it will require more than just winning elections. Unfortunately none of them seem to willing to pay the necessary price. Again, a pity.
