Excellent piece. Clarke probably remains my favorite science fiction writer. I think his sense of informed wonder, the ability to see what really might be up around the bend, is what always appealed to me about him. Fantasy has usually been a turn-off for me but in reading Clarke you got the feeling that you might be reading about what the future just might actually hold.
Even in some of his later works, especially The Light of Other Days he was able to dazzle. I look forward to his last book, appropriately titled The Last Theorem and fully expect that it will leave me looking towards tomorrow with anticipation.
He’ll be missed.
