Yep, there may well have been an insurmountable fight to try to kill it, but had anyone thought it important enough to make a sustained stink about, they’d have the high ground right now and it would be a slam dunk to the voter who listens to facts and not rhetoric and attacks.
But, since that sustained fight against it wasn’t there, Republicans who try to push this point now just look like they are grasping. This is why I don’t like the loose term of “fight dirty” because to too many people it means name calling and trying to get incriminating photos.
Rather, take a principled stand on something that has the facts to support you and look like the party of reason and learned judgment. Not the party of mudslinging, exclusion, and whining. After all, if you have convincing points to make, you don’t need to decide if you want to be inclusive or not…people will just agree with you.
What appears to be happening with Pelosi right now is a perfect example of what not to do. If you are against waterboarding, be against it. Don’t change your opinion as it becomes politically advantageous under the hopes that a secret document will remain secret. I have more respect for someone who takes a principled opinion I totally disagree with than I do for someone who simply agrees with me today because they want my vote. In that sense, the “exclusionary” right wing should be lauded for sticking to their guns/principles, but if they don’t have the numbers they are going to be tilting at windmills while the country goes on without them.
Simply put, pick your fights and don’t fall to the lowest common denominator because it makes you feel good in a schoolyard tussle kind of sense. Politics isn’t a game, nor should it be simply a means to a nice paycheck.
