The short answer is arrogance and pride are sins. And sin leads to destruction. This man thought himself to be special and capable of deceiving others to his benefit. At least thats what the devil whispered in his ear when he tempted him. It is an old, old scenario and Man cannot resist the power of Satan himself.
So now Mr.Spitzer must live with the consequences of his sin. The only hope for his redemption is repentance; but in these times when morality is elastic Mr. Spitzer may have difficulty getting on that path.
