Another aspect of this is the increasing strength of the old East German communist party (now renamed The Left). They have recently been seated in West German state parliaments, which requires that they get at least 5% of the vote and they are strong in the East. The Social Democrats are losing votes to them, raising fears that stable governments may become very difficult to achieve in the future. The Left is anti-capitalist, anti-American, anti-globalisation, anti-military and totally populist. Fear of this party only strengthens the tendency of other parties to indulge their worst tendencies.
