But where is the proof? “Porkulus” and “Bill Ayers” are not arguments, they’re slogans. Their shortcuts for actual thought, since they don’t explain or define anything.
Give me concrete examples of how the Obama Administration is seizing wealth to distribute it, dole-like, to the shiftless masses. And no, raising marginal tax rates by 3 percentage points is not enough, nor is passing a stimulus bill designed to kick-start a stalling economy. We can argue in good faith about the wisdom of the stimulus bill’s priorities and size, but what, for God’s sake, is the good of deriding it as communazism?
We do a great disservice to those who suffered under and fought against real totalitarianism by accusing the president, in fits of incoherent rage, of behaving like Mao.
We also do a great disservice to ourselves. To prove that you understand communism, fascism, etc., you have to know about and be able to discuss things like the industrial proletariat, the labor-theory of value, the creative destruction of capitalism, the corporatist state, state terror, and political utopianism. These are not phrases that show up in the writings of most conservatives…both because they seem to be ignorant of anything beyond superficial slogans and, more importantly, because informed debate does not serve the needs of demagogues.
The times are too dangerous to allow public debate to be dominated by ignorance. To answer a question posted above, I voted for Barack Obama. I have news for you all: the vast majority of voters of my generation did, largely for the reasons our grandparents voted for FDR. We don’t worship the state, we are committed patriots who love this country and its ideals, and we demand competence and character from our leaders.
