The American left’s primary enemy has always been christians or conservatives, and the only threat they perceive from islamic terrorism is the power it gives the American right as a political weapon. I believe Michael Moore stated it a few days after 9/11, “there is no terrorist threat” which has mostly been the universal message from the far-left for some time now. Some leftist professors actually enjoyed what happened on 9/11, which I’m sure you will remember vividly. Basically, their enemy will always be exclusive to anyone that stands in the way of their secular progressive agenda.
Whereas, classic liberals on the other hand have differing opinions about the seriousness of islamic jihad. They are small in number, but vocal, and are often called names neo-cons if not worse by the hard left.
If you will also recall, there was an uproar from the left about the treatment of Saddam Hussein after his capture. I can remember Madeline Halfbright being upset, and being outspoken about doctors looking inside his mouth, among other things (I guess doctors gazing inside his mouth was a form of torture also). I only bring this up because,we have been known to jest about the left’s love affair with terrorist and tyrants, and so often their actions make the joke become more fact than fiction.
