“Five Centuries of The Pillage of a Continent,” namely South America. Pillage usually means a [foreign] army sweeping through an area and taking everything that is valuable, with no domestic defenders remaining to stop them. I have heard that this is an Anti-NorteAmerican book. But I don’t remember celebrating our five hundredth anniversary, and I don’t remember a U.S. army sweeping through South America ever. Central America, and Mexico yes, but not South America. We defended them with the Monroe Doctrine, and our corporations no doubt used sharp practices to exploit hidden natural resources they couldn’t develop unaided, but is that Pillage? Why can’t our president say that?
