“Conservative” is a relative term. As the nation drifts left, so do conservatives. Moynihan and Scoop Jackson would be perfectly comfortable in the modern Republican Party.
Thomas Jefferson OTOH would probably be wandering in 3rd party purgatory – or just oting out of the process altogether – like many of my libertarian brethren.
