Jonah Goldberg often reminds people that the state cannot love you. I will add that it is one thing to respect your leader, but not to the point of adoration. Conservatives may have admired Ronald Reagan, but none turned him into a secular god. Fascist leaders not only enjoy being worshipped—they demand it! One is eventually required to live totally for the state. All other relationships are deemed of secondary importance.
