Okay, that’s a start, then: it puts you ahead of, eg, Megan McArdle. But simply defining the people who start to show the effects of the appeal of authority as “not conservative” is tautology, not argument. But if we start to define everyone who sees the appeal of nationalistic authoritarianism in any context as “not a conservative”, we’re going to end up with the category of “conservatives” being nearly or completely empty.
This is not to say, by the way, that I would argue the “yes we can” cult of personality around Obama doesn’t start to smell of fascism.
