Except when I was in the military, I have never carried a gun and probably would not do so even if my state (Iowa) adopted concealed carry legislation. But I have no fear of my fellow law-abiding citizens carrying guns. I know the criminals already have guns and it would be reassuring to know that at least some non-criminals other that police officers had guns, too, both for the right of actual self-defense and the more important idea that a criminal will not be able to safely assume his victim is unarmed.
