The NYT has neither retracted or recanted on the McCain story. What they have done is allude to it in other stories, and I expect the Times to treat the story as factual throughout the entire electoral campaign.
Newspapers are partisan in a variety of ways, some like the NYT are very partisan. What is most annoying is their arrogant, self-righteous hypocrisy in claiming that they are not partisan.
The McCain article, from whatever motivations, was a political “attack” piece. Everyone who read it knows it. The times will do more political “attack” pieces. For them to continue to deny it, merely undercuts their own credibility.
