It is important to note that people respond to high tax rates with reduced birth rates. Reduced birth rates lead to demand for immigration to provide the needed workers, legal and illegal. Immigration, particularly the illegal kind, leads to national minorities which have every incentive to overthrow the existing government.
Countries die from internal rot, long before they are crushed from the outside. A fish rots from the head.
