A re-do of The Best Years of Our Lives would be a better choice. The characters could be survivors of the Afghan and Iraq wars, all with some part of their inner being badly mangled by the war experience. The lovers would be found in each of the segments and their love for each other would be sacrificed for the benefit of their country.
